Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com and being a valued member. It is unfortunate to hear that you are having issues with your mower and I do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. I'm looking at your model number 917372471 and from your description I suspect that the gearbox may have failed. You are not required to oil to the case unless it has been opened for servicing. Here is a link that will help you troubleshoot the problem are having. Just click the blue link above to be taken to the page. I trust this information will help you.

GEAR CASE

To keep your drive system working properly, the gear case and area around the drive should be kept clean and free of trash build-up. Clean under the drive cover twice a season. The gear case is filled with lubricant to the proper level at the factory. The only time the lubricant needs attention is if service has been performed on the gear case. If lubricant is required, use only Texaco Starpfex Premium Grease, part no. 750355. Do not substitute.

Thank you for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com.

Q:

I have not heard back from you since 9/23/2014 917372471 Craftsman Lawn mower

A:

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I will be more than happy to help with your walk behind mower. Upon researching model 917372471; page 13 under gear case indicates to keep your drive system working properly, the gear case and area around the drive should be kept clean and free of trash build up. Clean under the drive cover twice a season. Second it states the gear case is filled with lubricant to the proper level at the factory. The only time the lubricant needs attention is if service has been performed on the gear case. Third if lubricant is required, use only Texaco Starplex Premium Grease, part number 750355. Do not substitute. I posted a link showing the drive diagram. Remove the wheels and look at the inside of them to make sure the teeth are not damaged. Second look at the pinions number 13 on the diagram. The pinion is the gear that turns the wheel. After that you will see the dust cover and will need to remove it. Behind that you will see the wheel adjuster with a bearing inside. Make sure the wheel adjuster bearings are not seizing up. Make sure this is done for both sides. Also do not oil or grease plastic wheel bearing as they will attract dirt and dust and shorten the life of the self-lubricating bearings. Use only dry powdered graphite type lubricant sparingly. Check the tensioner which is number 37 on the diagram. Make sure the spring is not worn out. Then with all that off the gear case, try to engage it with the cable. Look at the axle to see if it turns or if you’re still getting smoke. If it is still not turning then the issue could be that the entire gear case needs replacing as the internals are not serviceable. If you have any further question please re-post.

If you have any further questions please re-post. Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. We appreciate your business. Have a great day.

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I will be more than happy to help with your walk behind mower. Upon researching model 917372471, I found the manual for the unit. It indicates to use plastilube number 1. I linked the page for the plastilube. One othere thing is the gears could be worn and adding lube will not affect it much if they are already worn out.

If you have any further questions please re-post. Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. We appreciate your business. Have a great day.

Your answer is not helpful to me. First off, if the drive wheels are hard to turn, is that an indication the gear box is he problem? My original question said I "suspect" that is a problem, but I don't know. That's why I need an "expert's" comment. I too have the manual for the unit. I don't see where it says the gear box should be lubricated. Please tell me which page of the manual you are seeing that plastilube should be used. Lastly, do I always have to come to Manage My Life to see your answers? I thought you would Email your answer to me. Thanks
