To replace the belt on you mower you have to remove the belt from the gearbox first. You have to roll the belt off the bear box pulley. To do this, pull up on the belt while you turn the gearbox pulley. Make sure to do this with the spark plug wire disconnected. This will give you enough slack to remove the belt from the engine pulley. You have to remove the blade and the debris shield if yours has one to replace the belt. I have provided you with the written instructions for replacing the belt on a front drive mower.

Mark T: thanks for the information. I encountered difficulty in removing the debris shield, probably due to excessive rusting of the fasteners, so they got doused with WD40. I do not know how to remove the blade adaptor, and once removed, can I expect to reuse that part? It appears to be friction fit, maybe a gear puller?

You can reuse the blade adapter it just slides on to the crankshaft but is probably rusted. To remove the blade adapter soak it with good penetrating oil. Wd-40 will work. Then lightly tap the adapter side to side to work in the Wd-40. After letting it sit for a while pull on the adapter with your hand and lightly tap the backside of the adapter to get it to slide. I have seen some adapters that are so rusted you need to use a puller to remove them. Please let me know if you need any other assistance.
