Question and Answers

Q:

Why won't my mower model 917.371950 restart? It was working fine. I stopped to empty the bag, and it will not start.

A:

The automatic choke on the engine might have stuck open. You can look at this and clean it if necessary. Remove the air cleaner from the side of the engine. Remove the 4- 5/16 screws holding the back of the air cleaner chamber to the carburetor. The choke plate is just inside the intake on the carburetor. The automatic choke is plastic and operates the choke plate. Spraying the mechanism with carburetor cleaner or WD40 might stop any binding.

The choke plate should remain closed when the engine is not running. When the engine rotates and gets up to speed, the air movement from the fan on the flywheel causes the choke paddle to swing and opens the choke plate while the engine is running.
