I keep trying to post here but it disappears when I hit the "reply" button and logs me out. I have a model 917.370930 with a broken cable and I have the replacement part. The Sears parts person from whom I ordered it promised it would come with installation instructions (I actually have that promise in writing). NOT! No matter how I try, I cannot reach under the back deck (this mower is rear wheel drive) to squeeze the grommet closed to remove it from the deck. I have 9" needle nose pliers, but there is no room under there to open them up so I can then squeeze them closed. In fact, my hand obscures the view so I'm having to do this blind. WILL SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO REACH IN THERE AND SQUEEZE THAT FITTING SO I CAN REMOVE IT?!? I am of very modest means and cannot afford a service call.

Thank you for your question. I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. I know it can be difficult to reach the tabs to release the drive cable. I recommend removing the blade first. Then remove the blade adapter and the bolt securing the debris shield. Once the shield is removed, you should be able to access the tabs by reaching through the hold the belt travels. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark T.

Mark, I am an amateur at this but determined to try. Can you let me know which sockets I'll need and any other tools and also, since I have to work out of doors, about how many hours you think I should allow to take it all apart, replace the cable, then put it all back together.

Laura, I would plan on the repair taking roughly one hour to replace the cable. I think you will need a 9/16 wrench, 5/16 wrench or nut driver. You will also need a pair of needle nose pliers and a straight blade screwdriver. I do not believe you will need anything else. The hardest part of the repair will be removing the blade and rear baffle. Just be sure to disconnect spark plug wire before you start.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. By what you have stated I suspect the problem with the fuel or a partly plugged main jet in the carburetor. If the fuel is older than five weeks old drain, it out and refill it with fresh fuel. If the fuel is fine, I recommend cleaning or replacing the carburetor. I found a video that will show you the steps needed to clean the carburetor. Click here to watch the video. If cleaning the carburetor does not cure the problem, I recommend replacing the carburetor. Here is a link to order any parts you need. Sears Parts Direct .

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears technician. Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations: Sears Home Services .

Q:

how do I change the oil in my lawn mower craftsman rotary lawn mower?

A:

Maintaining your lawn mower is the key to having a long proper working tool. A suggestion that I recommend is going onto your owners manual and in there it will have the information you need to change the oil of your lawn mower. I have attached the link below which contains your owners manual. I hope the information that I have provided you below is helpful! http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals/27912/CRAFTSMAN-Walk-Behind-Lawnmower-Gas-L0804470?brand_name_search=917.371822+

Thank you for your question.

I have added an image below showing how to change the oil in your mower. You need to remove the spark plug wire first. The remove the oil dip stick and tip the mower onto its side over an oil pan with the oil fill tube down. This will allow the oil to drain out of the engine. Once all of the oil is drained, tip the mower back up right and refill with SAE-30 motor oil. Do not forget to reconnect the spark plug wire.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.
