A:

Begin by replacing the spark plug. Spark plugs don't cost much and if the spark plug is bad it will prevent spark to the cylinder.

To test for spark with a new spark plug install the ignition wire to the spark plug before you install the plug. Hold the spark plug with insulated pliers or wear gloves and hold the base of the spark plug against a clean ground on the engine head or block. Get someone to pull the starter rope while you watch for the spark.

Do this test in a darkened area, it is hard to see the spark in bright sunlight.

Q:

My new power propelled mower, model 917.371813, won't stop propelling. There is no neutral. Help!

A:

You can take the cover off that is just behind the motor. The motion control cable is underneath this cover.

Where the motion control cable attaches to the idler pulley bracket is an adjustment. It is probably adjusted too tight. If you back off the adjustment it will probably correct the problem.

If you decide it is too much trouble to adjust the cable you can still take the mower back for exchange.
