Q:

Sears mower 917.370722 rear wheels lock when pulling backward. 917.370722

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

If you don't have a parts diagram of the lawnmower, please go to Sears Parts under the mower model number. Look on the second page that shows the drive mechanism for the mower. Look for item 31 on both rear wheels of the mower.

This pawl is what releases when you pull the mower backward to let the wheels turn. More than likely the pawls and related parts need cleaning. You might find something worn there, but usually the pawls are just gummed up and sticking.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Hi Jeff. Thanks for your response to my question. I was able to check the pawl on each rear wheel today and, as you suspected, they were dirty and in need of cleaning. After this was done the mower works fine and rolls back without any problem. It was a very simple fix! Thanks, again!

I have the same problem and also the drive stays engaged when I disengage the drive control. Are these two issues related to the drive pawl? Also, how do I get to the pawls to check them? It looks like the pawl is part of a larger assembly (Pinion assembly?). Does this come apart to get to the pawl?
