Question and Answers

Q:

shifting problem on craftsman model 917.299180

A:

This is the time of year to prepare the ground for planting but if the tiller needs maintenance, it can upset the planting clock. I did some checking and found two similar questions that may provide some help while you wait for the expert response. I attached those links below. I hope this information helps you get back to work.

On the right side of the transmission you will see a little stub that's kind of silver colored. Tip the tiller to the left and put some penetrating oil all over the little silver stub and leave the tiller tipped so the oil will run down that shaft into the transmission. After about 15-20mins come back and stand the tiller up straight and then oil the base of the shifter shaft where it comes out of the transmission.

Hold some pressure on the shifter (as if shifting gears) and then use a hammer to tap on the silver shaft end on the side of the transmission. Don't beat on it, but just tap to see if you can get it to pop into gear. If it does going into gear you may have to repeat the tapping part to get it to come back out of gear and then do that a few more times in/out of gears to see if you can free it up.

If everything seems to free up and shift right then add about a half tube of multi-purpose lithium grease to the transmission (grease zerk). If you still cannot get the transmission to change gears then the transmission will need to be serviced or replaced.
