Question and Answers

Q:

drive area for tines 917299130

A:

Thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com, and for being a valued member.

I would presume the vibration is being caused by the transmission which drives the tines if the vibration is excessive. I have a few suggestions to check:

Check the pulley to make sure the center of it (that goes over the shaft) is not worn out. It may just be the pulley worn out. I've not seen that happen too many times but it certainly is possible.

If the pulley and shaft are mating up pretty good then the problem may be within the transmission. It could be the input shaft bushing/bearings worn or possibly even the input shaft itself.

The vibration from the shaft could be causing the unit to have difficulties shifting (gears inside not lining up correctly) or there could be other problems inside the transmission. It would have to be opened up and inspected to know for sure.

If you're not used to doing transmission work (on this type of machine), I hesitate to direct you to open the transmission up. It can be a bit of a job and there are no manuals to go by.

I hope this helps, and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

Tiller Model 917.299130 can't shift gears. Which side of the transmission is removable for access to the innards--the LH side or the RH side.?

A:

Thank you for the detailed information.  This may be an issue Mr. Hoover that might be able to be settled with just a little bit of Marvel Mystery Oil.  I've located a link that will discuss this thought in more detail.  Click here to view the link.  Though this link discusses a different model number,
the mechanics are likely going to be very similar. Keep in mind that an expert will be
responding within the next two business days if not sooner and will likely offer you more information and
instruction. I hope this information will be helpful and have a nice day.

A:

I prefer to take the left side off, but I do believe it can really go either way. If all of the screws and nuts have been removed then it may just be that the case covers are stuck. The last one of these I had to take apart, I had to pry the cover off as it had become stuck from the gasket and sealant.

Thank you for using Manage My Life!
