craftsman mdl 917.293482 engine runs, tines turn but tiller will not move forward or backward. drive belt is there and seems tight when drive control bar pulled 917293482 Craftsman Rear tine tiller

A:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tiller. If the tines are moving when it is in gear and the bail is pulled, the belt and belt tension is fine. If you have tried the tiller in all the gears and the wheels will not drive, there is a problem in the transmission. The transmission most likely has a broken gear. Usually in a case like this, the transmission needs to be replaced. The reason I recommend replacing the transmission, is that the manufacturer does not have a repair manual to show how the transmission goes together. I have had many customers take the transmission apart and they cannot figure out how it goes back together. If you take a bunch of pictures as you take the transmission apart, you may be successful in repairing it.

If you decide to repair or replace the transmission, you can order the parts from the following link. Replacement parts for a Craftsman tiller model 917293482.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears  technician.  Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations:  Sears Home Services.

Q:

My Craftsman tiller tines stopped turning when it hit a small rock. What can I do to start them up again?

A:

The tines on your tiller have a shear pin on each side. I suspect you sheared the shear pins.

Look on the center portion of the tines for the shear pins. The shear pins are item 2 in the parts list for the tiller.

Q:

I own a Craftsman rear tine, 6.5 hp tiller. Why does it stall when a don't have the choke all the way open?

A:

The problem will be in the carburetor. Order a overhaul kit and put it in the carburetor and clean all the passages in the carburetor body or replace the carburetor.
