Q:

Lubing transmission case on a front tine sears tiller? 917-292481

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

This is a sealed transmission, so in order to service it, it will need to be pulled and opened up. You will need to create your own gasket with a gasket creator and use Plastilube Grease # 1, or part number 6066J to fill it back up before closing it. There isn't a zerk fitting to add grease externally.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

A:

Without a model number, I can only give you general information for your tiller.

Horizontal drive engines are used in several different applications. The engine manufacturer puts several oil drain ports so the drain will be accessible when installed in these different applications. The port that is easiest for you to access is the one you should use. All the ports go into the sump of the engine.

Tiller model 917-292481; answer above does not answer the question from the other Bob. There are two oil FILLER (not drain) tubes on my tiller, one (red) directly above the other (yellow). Should I fill to full on the red tube, thus overfilling the bottom one, or should I fill to the level of the bottom tube, leaving the top one empty? This question is not addressed in the operators manual or in the above answer. This tiller was given to me practically unused but I will not use it until I'm sure about the oil level. If both filler ports go to the same place, the upper and lower ports cannot be interchangeable; oil level can't be the same, the ports are at different heights.

How do you change or check the gear box oil on front tine tiller? 917292301 Craftsman Tiller

A:

I did look into the question and your transmission is sealed so the only way to add oil is to get it serviced.  On page 13 of your Owner's Manual states that information.
