check the gas cap vent. the cap has a vent to let air into the tank as the gas comes out if the vent is clogged the tank can't get any air to replace the gas and will actually stop the flow of gas from coming out the fuel line. you can run it with the cap loose just setting on the tank with 1 turn so it is not tight and see how it runs

I checked the Gas cap and no change. I did however notice that when I set the throttle to low, it sputters along. When I increase the throttle, it stalls.

Q:

diagram on how to install drive belt 917289240 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thank you for choosing Sears and contacting us with your question about how to install the drive belt on your Craftsman tractor model 917289240.  I will be happy to help you with this. I have included the link below for you to view the owner’s manual online.

The belt replacement instructions are on page 24 of the manual. Since the mower deck needs to be removed when replacing a belt, you may want to replace both belts while you have the deck off. The deck removal instructions are on page 21. I have also included the link below for our tractor repair guides which you may find helpful when you are performing maintenance on your tractor.

SAFETY WARNING: Make sure to follow the safety precautions in your owner’s manual when repairing the tractor. Park it on a level surface and engage the brake. Shut off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire. Make sure the wire cannot come into contact with the spark plug during your repair. Parts may have sharp edges. Use caution and wear work gloves. If you would prefer to have a technician complete the repair for you, you can set up service at www.SearsHomeServices.com or by calling 1-800-469-4663.

I hope this answers your question. Thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business.

Q:

how to tighten motion belt on 917.289240? 917.289240

A:

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I will be more than happy to help with your lawn mower. Upon researching model 917.289240; would like to assist you with your belt question. You are correct about the manual not having any information on tightening the mower drive belt. The belt is not designed to be tightened and there are not provisions for it. The engagement of the belt is done by a pulley on a lever that tightens to the correct amount, due to a spring at the end of the cable that is hooked to the lever that you use to engage the mower. If the belt is too tight, it will not disengage. If the spring is not the correct one and it's too tight, excessive wear can occur to the components and the belt.

I trust this information will help you, we appreciate your business thank for choosing Sears.
