Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Craftsman Tractor model number 917289221.  

This is a 42 inch deck so it takes 2 blades.   

The regular blade part number is 134149.

The Premium blade part number is 139775.

The premium blades are worth getting.   Last a lot longer.

Looking at the symptoms I would advice you to look at the shift linkage, see if there is any damages or links that might be loose. It sounds like links arent conecting the right way so you have to push it all the way to line evrything up then put it in reverse. Kinda like syncros in a tranmission on a car.Hope this information has help you.
