Q:

Starts but wont stay running 917289101 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having with tractor. I know how frustrating that is.

This sounds like a carburetor issue, but since you've replaced it, it should be good. When you say it starts, does the engine actually run for a minute or so, or does it just crank?

Since you've verified air, fuel, and spark, the only other component would be compression. I would check the valve clearances. Briggs engines will need to have the intake and exhaust valves adjusted periodically.

To adjust the valves on the engine, remove the 4 screws in the valve cover and remove the valve cover. Remove the spark plug(s) from the engine.

Put a clean small screwdriver into the spark plug opening so you can tell when the piston is at the top of the stroke.

Rotate the flywheel until the piston is at top dead center and neither valve has any pressure on them. The push rods will be loose in the rocker arm. If one push rod has pressure on it, rotate the engine again and when it comes back to the top of the stroke neither push rod should have any pressure.

Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the end of the push rod and the rocker arm.

The clearance on the intake valve should be .003- 005 inches. The clearance on the exhaust valve should be .005-.007 inches.

If adjustment is required, loosen the Allen set screw in the center of the nut on the rocker arm and adjust the nut to obtain the proper clearance. When you are through adjusting the clearance, tighten the set screw tight.

The intake push rod is aluminum, and the exhaust push rod is steel. This will help you determine which valve is which.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

drive belt 917289101

A:

Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect. I can certainly understand how frustrating it can be when your belt pops off and is loose on your mower. I did look into the model number you have provided and I have found information to assist you. There could be multiple parts that could cause the issue of your belt popping off. The parts could be the belt keeper, belt itself, pulley, or the deck.

I would recommend checking the belt keepers to make sure they are connected.
