I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having with the tractor. I know how frustrating that is.

You say initially it wouldn't start, does it start now? When you mention the pin in the back, I presume you are referring to the freewheel control? 

Make sure the PTO lever is disengaged. I know it sounds small, but I have done it before and my tractor wouldn't start. Check to make sure the freewheel rod is actuating the lever on the transmission and is actually in the engage mode. You may need to jack up the rear of the tractor and have someone help engage/disengage the rod while you check the lever on the transmission to make sure its moving. It might need to be cleaned or lubricated.

Make sure the belt is on all the pulleys and routed properly. Check to make sure the belt is tensioning around the pulleys when the clutch is disengaged.
