Q:

Transmission overheating in 30 minute increments on model 917288360 917288360 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

Part of the maintenance for the tractor will be cleaning the transaxle fan and cooling fins. This is covered on page 18 of the owner's manual. I would start there and make sure they are clean and the fan is not damaged. That is what cools the transaxle.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. I recommend removing the belt from the transaxle pulley and turning the pulley by hand. The pulley should turn without making any noise. If it is making a noise, the transaxle will have to be replaced. The parts can be ordered from our parts website: Sears Parts Direct . . I came upon a website that shows how to repair the transaxle. If this is something you would like to try click here to be taken to that site.

Please reply below with more details if the pulley is moving fine.

Thank you for using Manage my life.

Hi. I'd like to replace the belt, but am unclear about what the part number is for the belt that goes to the transaxle. I called Sears parts and was told 130969 - but the description of this is a mower deck belt. Any thoughts? Model # 917288360. Thanks.

Hi Mark. It turns out the problem was very basic. All of the symptoms (slow forward and backward momentum, variable speed, squealing sound) turned out to be that the belt slipped to the wrong side of one of the pulleys. I couldn't diagnose this until I had the mower off and was ready to replace the drive belt. I re-set the belt and it worked perfectly. (I realize it may slip again, so I'll keep the new drive belt and put it on when it happens.) Thanks again for all of your help. This is a great forum and you've been very helpful. All the best. Claude

I had the same problem with my tractor and found that there was debris above the brake pedal bar. It is located under the tractor towards the front, not easy to see. But, I cleaned all the debris out of it and I had my power back. It was so bad I could hardly even get up a slight hill. Hope this helps.
