Q:

Sears Lawn Tractor Emitting White Smoke

A:

Smoke coming from a lawn tractor can be just a little oil on the engine. Hopefully it is not serious. While you wait for the expert to review and respond you can check the two links below if it turns out you need parts or repair. One is Sears Home Services for repair and the second is to Sears Parts Direct for your model tractor. It has parts and schematics.

Thanks for your input, Barbara. I do think there is some oil on the engine, as there was a leak from the defective breather tune I replaced, but there seems to be a lot of smoke, so I fear it is more serious. I also noticed a rattling sound coming from the engine it seems . I really appreciate your help and the links you provided. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the engine. The white or gray smoke is oil burning. I recommend smelling the oil first. If it smells like gas, it should be changed right away. Then check the air filter. If it is oil soaked, it need to be replaced. Before installing the new filter, clean all the oil that has dripped. Once that is clean, start the engine without the air filter and catch for oil coming out of that small tube. If the oil stops coming out of the tube reinstall the air filter and check the operation. If the oil does not stop coming out I recommend having the engine repaired by a service technician. You can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Here is a link to order any parts you need. Sears Parts Direct .

Please let me know if you need further assistance on the cultivator.

Thank you for using Manage my life.

None of the things you described seem to be the issue. The smoke is coming from the other side of the tractor opposite the air filter, near the bottom. I think there is an engine or valve problem. Not encouraged by the fact that the tractor is only two and a half years old and such an issue is occurring (six months after the manufacturer's two year warranty, of course). I had actually called Sears tech support with this problem last year right before the warranty was up, and was told by a Sears rep that the problem was caused by gasoline that had moisture in it. Turns out they were wrong. Their incorrect diagnosis led to me putting off the repair thinking it was just moisture in the gas, and now it looks like I have to pay for a service call. Pretty disappointing. I expected more out of Sears Craftsman product.
