Question and Answers

Q:

My Tractor turns reel hard and has lots of play in it . What should I you for 917287381 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the steering issues you are having with the tractor. I know how frustrating that is to have happen.

I would start by lubricating the steering components and see if that helps or makes any difference. If the lubrication doesn’t help, you may have some worn out steering components. You need to determine what is causing the tractor to be hard to steer. There are bearings in the spindles that might be dry or worn. The sector gear and the steering gear on the steering shaft could be dry or worn.

You should clean the bearings in the spindles with WD40. You should apply grease to the sector and steering gears with a paint brush.

Remove the key from the tractor so it can't be accidentally started. Lower the deck to the lowest position. Get someone to turn the steering wheel back and forth as you crawl under the tractor and look for worn parts.

The play in the steering on the tractor could be caused by a few different problems. The first is the adapter under the steering wheel being loose. Remove the steering wheel and make sure the adapter bolt is tight. If that does not work, I would suspect the gears of the steering assembly are worn. To repair the steering assembly the mower deck has to be removed. The steering wheel and the adapter need to be removed. Once those are removed, the assembly should come out. Then reassemble in the reverse order.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.
