Q:

deck questions 917275350 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thank you for your question.

I will be happy to assist you. I looked up the model number submitted. You can install a 42 inch deck on this tractor. The part number for the complete mower deck is 169583 and can be ordered from the following link. Replacement mower deck for a Craftsman tractor model 917276390.

I would let the customer know that the cost of the deck is almost half of what a new tractor cost. The customer may be able to sell the tractor and take the money from the tractor along with the money he would have spent on a new deck and use to purchase a new tractor. The new tractor will come with a two year warranty.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using Manage my life.

Mark.

Q:

Craftsman Lawn Tractor (18HP B&S Eng) quits when it runs for about 15 minutes. 917.276390

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having with the tractor. I know how frustrating that is.

You're right; my first inclination would be spark too. Did you verify spark before replacing the coil? If you had spark, you should've been good. Do you have spark now? Just pull the plug, reattach it to the boot, ground it to the cylinder, and turn the key to start. The coil on the engine has to have an air gap of .010" to .012" between the coil and the magnet on the flywheel.

Outside of that, I think the gas cap on the engine is not venting. The gas cap should let air into the fuel tank to fill the space that occurs as the fuel is burned. If air is not let into the tank in sufficient volume to keep the tank filled with fuel and air, the fuel tank goes into a vacuum inside. When this vacuum occurs, fuel stops flowing out of the fuel tank and the engine dies. The engine will not start until the fuel cap has vented enough air into the tank to break the vacuum.

You can test the fuel cap the next time the engine dies, by removing the gas cap and putting it back on. If the engine starts back up, the fuel cap is bad.

Q:

Very hard to shift it in to gear, and when it does shift it doesn't move ( forward or in reverse) 917276390 Craftsman Lawn tractor

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the shifting issue and lack of movement with the tractor. I know how frustrating that is to have happen.

On the front of the transmission, on top, you will see little triangle shaped cover. One screw holds that cover down. Remove that cover. Be careful doing that because there is a little spring under it that is subject to jump out and get away. That would be a bad thing. When you have the cover off, drop several drops of oil down the hole. I prefer to use something my Marvel Mystery Oil for that, but you can use whatever light oil you have on hand. While the cover is still off, hold your finger over it and have someone move the shifter from gear to gear a few times. Then drop a little more oil down the hole. Put the cover back on. Move the gears some more.

If you still have the problem, it may get better the more you move the shifter around. If it doesn't get any better or gets worse, then I'd say you have an internal shifting problem. That would be something you'd need a qualified technician to tend to.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.
