Well, thank you very much. Of course my tractor has #23{anti-rotation bracket}. Page 38 shows as such. Page 25 says Clutch locator. Two very different pictures. It sure would have been nice if they just said they are the same. How is any sane person supposed to know they are referring to the same part w/2 different pictures & 2 different names ? Corporate ambiguity I guess. Again, thanX much. Very much.

Q:

How can I fix my DYT 4000 (917.275901)? It starts but only runs a few seconds. 917275901 Craftsman Tractor

A:

It sounds like your fuel pump is not working, or not correctly. To test, disconnect fuel line from carb, and start tractor. Fuel should pulse out at a good rate immediately. If not, anti syphon is NOT working, and or the pump is not functioning. It is a diagram style pump. They do wear out, and it sounds like it is starved for fuel.

The part that is broken is the drag link and is part number 175121. The new drag link will come with the ball ends connected to it. To replace the drag link it is easiest to remove the mowing deck from the tractor. I have provided you with the instructions for removing the deck. Once the deck is out of the way, you will see the other end of the drag link. Just remove the nuts securing the drag link then install the new drag link.

The drag link on my tractor, 917288033, sounds like what these people are asking about but the experts are getting it wrong. The drag link (that goes from the steering to the left front spindle DOES NOT have a ball attached to it, the drag link has a hole in the end that goes over a ball that is attached to the spindle, NOT the other way around. I have looked at all the schematics and pictures and what sears shows DOES NOT look like mine, and probably all these other peoples also. Just added the pics, now you can see, it's nothing like the sears pictures.

William, the drag link is held on to the spindle by a nut that threads on to the balls other end that goes through the hole in the spindle. once the ball and hole are worn on the drag link the ball will always pop back out pushing the clip off if it has a clip. the june 2 2011 post guy may have received the wrong part or something but the drag link comes with the ball in the drag link and threads on the end of the ball. the part # for your model # tractor 917.275901 is drag link part # 175121.

Thank you for your question.

Your tractor most likely uses an Operator Presence (seat) switch that will cause engine to stall if blades are engaged or the brake is released without anyone on the seat. If ample amount of weight is not kept on the seat during operation or the operator is leaning forward the tractor will stall because the Operator Presence (seat) switch senses that the operator is not completely on the seat.

To check Operator Presence (seat) switch:

  1. Lift seat.
  2. Locate wires that connect to Operator Presence (seat) switch under the seat.
  3. Disconnect and clean any debris in the switch connector. Use an ohmmeter to check the switch. When the switch is not pushed, the reading should be 0 ohms (closed). When pushed it should read ol ( open load )
  4. Make sure the connector is fully seated on the seat switch. The connector is a special connector that will short the two wires if it is not fully seated.

I am sorry I could not reply right away. I was off for a few days. If the engine dies when you release the brake or try to engage the blades the problem is likely in the seat switch. Make sure the connector on the seat switch is fully seated. If it is not seated the engine will still die if the brake is released or the blades are engaged. If the connector is fully seated, I recommend ohming out the seat switch. When the button is pushed you should have an open reading.

I hope this is helpful. Please reply with more details if you need further assistance.

Thank you, Mark T.
