Q:

V twin Briggs running on one cylinder 917.275520

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. I regret to hear that you are having issues with your engine and do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. Im looking at your model number 917.275520 and I recommend two NEW plugs, you may just have a bad plug.

If replacing them doesn't resolve problem, check that bolts that hold carburetor on intake manifold are tight & bolts that hold manifold at each cylinder are tight,it is possible it may be sucking air around gaskets.

If still no change in eng operation, remove valve covers & check operation/condition of push rods, rocker arms & any valves that don't move/operate smoothly.Briggs made two V twin eng,Intek & Vanguard, both of these engine shared some common problems in the valve train as the Intek used an aluminum push rod on intake & the vanguard used an aluminum rod on exh valve, there have been reports of aluminum rod bending, breaking or mushrooming on rocker arm end, possibly caused by rod breaking down from heat or a sticking or frozen valve also reports of cracked/broken aluminum rocker arms,as briggs has redesigned rocker arms 2-3 times over the yrs on both eng, also check valve clearance, should be .005" on intake/exh on intek/vanguard.I hope this information helps with your troubleshooting. If this does not fix your problem I recommend contact Briggs and Stratton directly.  If you have further questions please resubmit your question for further information.

Thank you for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com.

I believe I found and fixed the problem: the gap between the coil and the flywheel was too close and may not have been giving a hot enough spark. It seems to run ok now.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you received the wrong part. I looked up the part number from the manual for your model. I posted the page below that I found it on. Click on the image to enlarge it. I recommend looking for the part number on the cable you received. The part number should be 170545. If the part number is wrong or it does not have a part number, I recommend reordering it. Just call the 1-800 on the shipping label. They will be able to assist you. Before you reorder the part, look for a part number on the original cable.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using Manage my life.

Mark.

Bill,

I recommend checking for the part number on the original throttle cable. If it different I recommend ordering that part number. I would also recommend obtaining the model number under the seat. If the last digit is different, that maybe why we are coming up with the wrong part. Please let me know what you find.

Thank you for using Manage my life. Mark T.

No part # on the original. Model # is correct. Sears did contact me with a different part # that I have ordered but not received as of yet. Hopefully it will be the correct one.
