Q:

Grass catcher fitment 917275286

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

The baggers are pretty model specific and the fit up chart we have does not show bagger 24987. The only bagger I see currently applicable for this tractor model is part number 24916, or model 917.24916.

If you are looking at this bagger second hand, I would ask the seller if you can do a mock mounting or see how the mount bolts to the drawbar. There is a possibility it will work, but you could need fabrication of new mounts.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Thank you for contacting Sears Parts Direct with your question about replacing the Mandrel on your Craftsman Tractor. I am so sorry to hear the blade shaft is bent. The good news is a bent shaft means that the mandrel has done its job. Whenever the blade hits something hard like a root or a rock, the mandrel parts are supposed to give way to protect the deck from damage. Is it a smaller part, protecting the larger, more expensive part. When you replace the mandel, I recommend replacing the mandrel assembly. It will include the mandrel housing , the blade shaft and the upper and lower bearings already pressed together. Having the bearings pressed into the mandrel housing is important to prevent vibration of the deck that could cause serious damage. I have included the link to order the mandrel assembly. The self-tapping bolts that hold the mandrel assembly to the deck do not come with the assembly. Since they make their own threads into the mandrel, they normally snap when you try to remove them. I have included the link for them also.

(You will need 4 per mandrel.)

I recommend checking the blade itself for damage. A bent blade will give the lawn an uneven looking cut and could also damage the deck. If you need to replace a blade, I recommend replacing all of them so that they wear evenly. Since I don't know if you are mulching, bagging or discharging the the grass clippings out of the side of the deck, I have included the links for both types of blades for you. The blade bolt and washer should be reuseable. Your deck uses 3 blades. They are sold individually, so if you are going to replace all of them, be sure and order 3.

I recommend you also check the mandrel pulley on top of the deck for any damage. If damaged, it should be replaced also.

While you are completing the repairs to the tractor, I wanted to remind you to do your spring tune up of the engine. I have included the link for the tune up kit, just in case you haven't.

If I were you, I would go to Amazon.com and plug in the part numbers shown above. I just replaced the mandrel and blade shaft, along with 2 new blades and a belt. I saved about 50% over the prices wanted by Sears. One big advantage is that they offer mandrels that are drilled and include the bolts, so you don't have to go thru the hassle of using self-tapping bolts. They (self tapping) often break when you're trying to install them too.

Thank you for the input. I can understand the desire to save money on parts. Please keep in mind that Sears does price matching. If you find the manufacturer part on a competitor website, contact us with the part information and the website and we will be happy to see how much we can save you.

I do caution against using standard bolts in place of the self tapping ones. If you don't use the break away bolts you are defeating the purpose of the mandrel assembly. It is made to break away should the blade hit something hard like a root or a rock. If the mandrel doesn't break, then the force of the impact will damage the deck itself.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance by responding to this thread. Thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business.

So the obvious question is whats wrong with tappping the threads in the housing with a tap before inserting the bolts?
