Q:

My lawn tractor won't turn over when I turn on the ignition switch. What might be wrong? 917273480 Craftsman Lawn tractor

A:

Thank you for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com. I am sorry to hear about the starting issue you are experiencing with the tractor, I know how frustrating that is.

The first thing I would check would be the fuse behind the dash, if that fuse is out, it would prevent it from turning over. Also make sure the battery cables are nice and secure and no corrosion. If all the basics check out, here are a few additional suggestions:

With a multimeter, test the white wire on the solenoid with the key turned to start. Your reading should be 12 volts. If anything less or no reading, you don't have power making it to the solenoid and we will need to trace it out. If you have 12 volts coming to the solenoid, take a large screwdriver with a plastic handle and short the two large battery terminal posts with the metal portion of the blade. It will naturally spark, that is okay. When you short the two posts, it will bypass the solenoid and manually power the starter. At this point the starter should turn over and engage the engine. If the key is in start, it should want to fire up. If it's not in start, it will still turn over. If the starter turns over, more than likely it will be a solenoid issue. If the starter does not turn over, it will likely be the starter.

Go ahead and perform the checks I mentioned above and reply back with the outcome. If we need to do additional checks, we definitely can. If by chance you determine which component is at fault by the checks above, I have included blue links below that you may click on to be directed to the PartsDirect page to view and purchase the needed part. Don't forget to start by checking the fuse, sometimes it's the simplest things that can be wrong.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. The lift links are secured to the lift lever with clip pins. To remove the lift link you will need to reach in next to the engine and locate the lift lever. Then close to the side, you will find where the link is connected. Pull the clip pin out and push the link out. Next install the new link through the suspension arm then up onto the lift lever. Once into the lift lever secure with the clip pin. After you are done installing the link, you will need to level the mower deck. I have added an image below that shows how to level the mower deck.

I hope this is helpful please let me know if you need further assistance on the tractor.
