Q:

24 HP kohler engine 917273223 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you’re having with the tractor. I know how frustrating that is.

This sounds like a fuel issue, and I would suspect that the carburetor has an internal blockage in the fuel jet or one of the passageways. I would pull the carb from the engine. With a full can of carb cleaner, a wire brush, and a bread tie wire to poke through and clean the main jet; I would recommend a very thorough cleaning. Start by taking off the float bowl. Douse it very liberally with carb cleaner, and undo the pin for the float, and remove the needle and float. Clean them very thoroughly with the wire brush and carb cleaner. Pay close attention to the seat the needle sits in and clean it well. Once clean, start brushing the carb bowl and body and make sure you get all the varnish out. It may take three or four brushings with carb cleaner dousing in-between. From there, take the straw of the carb cleaner and shoot carb cleaner through any little hole or passageway of the carb. Shoot out the throat of the carb and poke the main jet with the bread tie wire. You have to make sure you get everything the first time, if you leave anything behind, it’s likely to reclog once you have it reassembled.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

Charging system 917273223 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you’re having with the charging system on this Kohler engine. I know how frustrating that is.

The charging system on this engine is comprised of a stator and a regulator. The stator is located underneath the flywheel. The stator connects to the regulator. You will need to test them to see which is at fault, unless you want to replace both parts. The stator is part number 237878-S, and the regulator is part number 41-403-10-S.

With the engine turned off, read the dc voltage across the terminals of the battery. A good, fully charged battery should read 12.6 volts dc.

Crank the engine and set the throttle to full. Read the voltage across the battery terminals again. If the stator and regulator are good, you should read around 14 volts dc.

If you don't see an increase in voltage, turn the engine off and go to the voltage regulator on the engine. Disconnect the 2 yellow wires from the regulator and connect the volt meter across the yellow wires. Set the meter to ac volts and start the engine. If the alternator is good you should read around 28 volts ac. If you have this voltage and the battery voltage didn't increase the regulator is bad. If you have less than 20 volts from the stator it is bad.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
