Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. If the tractor will not turn left I suspect the parts of the steering are worn. This tractor has a sector gear that turns when you turn the steering wheel. The sector gear has a drag link connected to it that connects to the left front spindle. The left and right spindles have a tie rod connecting them so when the left spindle turns it causes the right spindle to turn also. The parts that usually wear are the steering gear (which is mounted on the steering shaft) and the sector gear. This is also, where you lubricate the steering when the tractor is hard to steer. Brush some axle grease on the teeth of the sector gear and the steering gear. When you turn the steering left and right and look for areas of play. If you any play in the parts, the bushings are likely to be worn or the teeth on the gears are worn. The parts for the tractor can be ordered from the following link. Craftsman tractor parts

I haven't had a chance to check out your response but i want to add that when you turn right the sector gear turns fine but when you try to turn left the sector gear stops and the teeth on the steering gear starts to jump the teeth on the sector gear. Also the sector gear moves up and down like its not tight against the mower. Tried to tighten top bolt but it won"t budge.

jopops,

Thank you for the reply. The sector gear will move some up and down but should not move front to back. If you have any front to back, I recommend replacing the bushings. If the steering is binding when you turn left, I recommend lifting the front of the tractor so the wheels are off the ground. Then turn the wheels left and right. If it still skips when you turn left, I suspect something is binding. You will need to find where. I would take the drag link off and move each spindle to be sure they are free. Then turn the steering wheel to see if it is binding.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know what you find.

Q:

Replacment of mandrel on left side 917273090 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Hello Wayne,

Sorry to hear about your issue. Thankfully this is a easy replacement!

Some people may say to remove the wires from the spark plugs as a safety precaution, you can do this if you chose to but, simply ensuring that the ignition is in the off position, key is removed, and the blade clutch is disengaged will be enough.

Once you have taken these steps, you can go ahead and start removing the deck and replacing your mandrel.
