Q:

Garden tractors and snow throwers 917.272961

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

The snow thrower attachment made for your tractor is model number 486.24837, which would also require the bracket kit part number 24831. Looking at the two snow throwers in question, the mounting brackets look similar to one another, so you may just need to purchase the bracket kit. I would recommend pulling up the model specific snow thrower on Sears Parts to look at the parts breakdown, and then also look at the contents of the bracket kit to see if it would work. We cannot guarantee the usability of any non-model specific attachment, but with them being as close as they are, I would suspect it should work as long as you have the proper mounting brackets.

For convenience, I have linked the parts list for the model specific snow thrower and the bracket kit below.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Hi, You answered my question a while back. I am at it again and so far it seems you are correct. I bought the kit which allowed me to attach the 42" 486.248392 thrower to my tractor. I was also able to mount the 486.248463 brackets and clutch assembly. I also put on the drive belt for the 486.248463 and it mated well with my tractor. The question is regarding the auger belt. The 486.248463 calls for a 113" belt, part number 49392. The 486.248392 42" blower came with and calls for 47846 114" belt. The one thing that is odd, unless I am doing something wrong, is that it seems the auger belt is really long. About 10 inches too long. I am going to check again and see if I did something wrong in my routing of the belt, but given all parts seem to be fitting, what auger belt should I consider using with my crazy tractor, thrower, bracket/clutch combination?? It really does seem like it all fits together correctly. I wish there were a way to measure the route the belt takes and see what side I need or if there was a way to confirm that I have the right belt and am just installing it incorrectly.

The manual is no help at all. The so-called diagram is sketchy, at best. Can someone just send me a real diagram so I can clearly see how these belts are replaced on this specific tractor (model #917.272961)? I'd appreciate any help I can get......Thanks

Q:

I have a craftsman 48inch 20hp garden tractor, that keeps burring up ground drive belts

A:

The most common cause for belts smoking on riding mowers and tractors is the bearing in an idler pulley seizing. I suspect this is what is happening to you.

Sometimes the idler bracket gets bent if it hits something. Using the clutch to make the tractor move forward or backward instead of the motion drive lever will also bend the idler bracket sometimes. You should only use the clutch to engage the transaxle after starting the engine. The motion drive lever should be used after that to stop and start the tractor motion.

You would probably be better off to replace the idler pulleys and the bracket.

I need some advice on how to install the motion drive belt onto a 46", model 917.288720. The keeper around the pulley will not let me get the belt onto the pulley. Does this tractor require the keeper to be pried away from the pulley or what? Please help me - my hands are cut up and blood is all over the place.
