Q:

Craftsman Model 917.272260 blades will not stay engaged

A:

Check the voltage at the battery when the engine is running at full throttle. There should be about 13-14VDC at full throttle. If you do not have that much voltage then the charging system is not working as it should. Based on what you've said, I have a feeling that the charging system has failed and that's what's going on here.

Thanks for the insight. I checked the voltage at the battery at full throttle and it was 12.5VDC and dropping when the deck was engaged. As you said it seems as if the charging system is not functioning properly. Do you recommend changing the voltage regulator? Or could the alternator be bad or both? How can I check before I go buy unnecessary parts? By the way, my mower has an external voltage regulator. Thanks Dave

A:

On your regulator, you should have 2 wires that are the same color coming in from under the engine shroud. Those 2 matching wires will have AC voltage on them. At full throttle, there should be about 28-35 VAC on those wires.

If the AC voltage is not there, the alternator is bad. If the AC voltage is there, check the other wire (should be red in most cases) for DC voltage. There should be about 13-14VDC at full throttle on the other wire. You can put your negative lead from your meter onto the chassis but I prefer to meter the ground directly to the battery negative to be sure my reading is accurate. Then put your positive meter lead on that single wire.

If there is AC in but no DC out (or low DC out), then the regulator is bad.

Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your questions about using the mower deck from one tractor on a different model tractor. What an interesting question. I am happy to help you with this.

In order to see if the decks were interchangeable, I looked at several factors that would have a bearing on this. The first part I checked was the chassis. These two tractors have the same chassis. Unfortunately that is where the similarities ends. I will outline the differences I noticed.

1 - The model 917273500 tractor has a 42 inch deck and the blades are engaged by a lever attached to the clutch cable and spring assembly. The model 917272260 tractor has a 48 inch deck. The blades on this model are engaged by the PTO switch and an electric clutch.

2 - Tractors that have a 42 inch deck only use 2 belts. One controls the movement of the tractor. The other turns the blades. On tractors that use a 48 inch deck, there are 3 belts. The drive belt controls the motion of the tractor, the primary deck belt takes power to the deck and the secondary deck belt turns the blades in unison. The drive belts are the same on the tractors. Unfortunately there wouldn't be a way to route the deck belts correctly to the smaller deck.
3 - The lift assemblies that hold the deck to the chassis. The lifts also raise and lower the decks. Unfortunately parts are not interchangeable either.

Based on this information, I am sorry to tell you the deck from the 917273500 model will not fit onto the 917272260.
Your question didn't indicate why you wanted to change the deck. If you need a new deck for the 917272260 tractor, you can order a replacement deck housing, or a complete deck assembly with the blades, mandrels, pulleys and belts already attached. I have included the links for both of them for you.

Deck housing for Craftsman Tractor Model 917272260.
Complete Deck Assembly (does not include mulcher plate or gauge wheels) for Craftsman Tractor Model 917272260.

I hope this answers your questions. If I can be of any further assistance, please respond to this thread. Thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with removing the nut. The nut is right hand threads. The nut should be torqued to 70 foot pounds. To loosen the nut turn it counter clockwise. I used to hold the blade with a gloved hand and use a long wrench to loosen the nut. You can also use an impact wrench to remove the nut.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.
