why won't my mower get spark on spark plug while cranking? 917272081 Craftsman Lawn tractor

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears
I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is trouble with the engine not getting a spark.
Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Craftsman tractor model number 917272081.  With that I see your engine is a Kohler engine model CV490-27505.

There are 2 items that give a spark to the engine.  It is the spark plug and the ignition module, (where the spark plug wire is attached too).  Maybe your gap isn't correct, if you haven't changed the spark plug every year then I would get one of those also because they are pre-gapped when you get them from us at Sears.

How do you remove the "mandrel" from the aluminum "housing" on the "mower deck" on the Sears Craftsman riding lawn mowers? Will "Whack it with a hammer work"?

I don't understand what you are trying to do. The mandrel is the aluminum body the jackshaft goes through to turn the blade. If the mandrel is cracked on all three portions the bolts screw in to mount it, you need a new mandrel.

If part of the mandrel is still attached to the mounting bolts, you will have to hold the piece of aluminum with vice grip pliers and unscrew the bolts.

You need a new complete mandrel with the bearings, shaft, seal assembled to it.
