Question and Answers

Q:

Why won't the blades shut off? I have replaced the switch on the engage arm and they continue to run. 917271832 Craftsman Lawn tractor

A:

Thank you for your inquiry on your Craftsman Tractor, Model: 917.271832. From reviewing the details on your model,on the right hand side of the deck there is a flat idler that the engagement cable connects to. The bracket for that idler should have a spring that stretches to a hole in the mower deck. This helps pull the bracket and idler forward when you disengage the blades. If that spring is broken (or missing) you can have this problem. Also, there are rollers that the idler bracket rides against when you engage the deck. If those rollers seize up it will not allow the bracket to slide back forward. Those rollers are on the inside ends of the blade brake arms. Once the roller seize up, the bracket will continue to drag across them. With time, the dragging causes the roller and the bracket to chew into each other. This will cause flat spots on the rollers and it will also cut into the bracket. If that's the case the bracket will need to be replaced. If you feel a flat spot on the rollers, you can take them off and turn them over to give you some more time on them (in most cases).

Safety Warning: Before beginning the repair, disconnect the direct power supply to the tractor to prevent the risk of injury or any electrical shock.

Q:

fuel tank 917.271832

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

To replace the fuel tank you will have to remove the rear fender assembly. I have provided you with an image below that I have added arrows. The arrows are showing the location of the six bolts that have to be removed to lift the fender. Once the bolts are removed, unscrew the shifter handle. The seat and bracket should be able to stay connected to the fender assembly. Once you have all the bolts removed you need to unplug the seat switch harness then you should be able to lift the fender assembly off the tractor. You will be looking down at the fuel tank once the fender is out of the way. There is a metal bracket that goes across the fuel tank and it will need to come off. After that, the tank is just sitting there. The line connects up on the right side of the tank. Take the line loose and the tank will be free of the machine at that point.

If the tank is leaking at the seams, there is an updated tank that will be a better design than the original. The updated part number is 188462. It will come with instructions. If it’s not leaking at the seams, I would order the original tank, part number 157103.

Note: Remember to work in a well ventilated area and use caution when working around fuel. To install the next one just reverse the process and you should be in good shape.

Q:

Tractor - Snowblower fitment 842.240531 and 917.271832

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

Unfortunately, we do not have a fit-up chart for the older 842 styled snow thrower attachments made by Haban. The snow thrower attachment made for this tractor is model 486.24837. Looking at the two snow thrower attachments, the mounting brackets are different. You may get the snow thrower attachment to fit with some fabrication, but we cannot guarantee the effectiveness and usability of this non-model specific attachment.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.
