A:

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is problems with the tractor parts.

Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Craftsman Tractor model number 917.271823.

I am very sorry for the problems in getting this clutch cable.   It is the correct updated part number of 175067.

I cannot look up research.   Sorry but that is only done in our Sears Customer Care team.   1-800-366-7278.   You will need to contact them over the phone so that they can find the answer to the problem you are having.   I've sold alot of these over the years and first I heard that it was shorter.   Please give our Customer Care team a call so they can see what is wrong.

Evidently, there is no one to help on this issue. I have ordered the substituted part number and it is physically 7 inches shorter than the clutch cable that I removed. I have queried Sears Customer Care team and for some reason they cannot help. Basically from the responce that I receive from all, I get the feeling that no one cares if this problem gets resolved. I can look as well as anyone the illistrated parts diagram and find the substitue number, but should I try to install it and as it is 7 inches to short and I ruin it, I cannot send it back so I loose both ways!!!

A:

The links Alina F sent have good troubleshooting instructions for your tractor.

The spark from the positive connection of the battery make me think you have a bad connection on the battery. I would remove the negative wire from the battery then remove the positive wire. I suspect you will find the connection needs cleaning and tightening.
