Q:

My mower blades stop spinning intermittenely when mowing the grass. Any suggestions on what could be wrong 917271014 Craftsman Lawn tractor

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you're having with the tractor. I know how frustrating that is.

This type of issue is typically caused by one of the tractor's safety switches. There are three safety switches on the unit. There is the seat switch, blade engagement interlock switch, and the brake/clutch interlock switch.

I would start by cleaning the contacts and making sure the connectors are firmly secured. If that doesn't help, you will need to test the switches for continuity with a meter. To help you do so, I have linked a short video below that you can watch.

Tractor Safety Switch Testing

This tractor does not use an electric clutch, so if the safety switches all check out, I would recommend taking a look at the idler bracket that puts tension on the belt on the deck and check the spring. Also check out the clutch rods that engage the blades. You can lower the deck to the lowest setting and have someone engage the blades (tractor off) to see the clutch rods in action.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

mandrel housing 917271014 Craftsman Lawn tractor

A:

Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect. I will be more than happy to assist you with your craftsman tractor.

From the information you have provided above, after researching model number 917.271014. yes, sometimes the mandrill is referred as a spindle. However, on your model it is listed as the mandrill housing # 14 on the diagram.. The part number for the housing is 128774. The housing is about $23. We have a mandrill assembly that has the bearing, shafts, and mandrill housing pre-assembled. The part number for the assembly is 1307974 and is only $55.

I hope you found this information useful. Again thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business, have a great day.

Q:

917.271014 Lawn Tractor runs fine then shuts off and won't start CV15S-41567 Kohler Engine

I agree with your assumption of the ignition module being defective. To be sure, pull the plug and reattach it to the plug wire. Ground the base of the plug to the metal cylinder and have someone get onto the tractor and try to start it. If you have no spark, the module needs to be replaced.

There will be some disassembly to get to the ignition module, but the module itself is pretty straight forward to install. Just make sure you gap the module to the flywheel with a gap of 0.012". You can use a feeler gauge or about the thickness of a standard business card. Also check the magnets on the flywheel and make sure they don't have any surface rust. If so, lightly sand them to remove it.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.
