Q:

Will not start __No fire in spark plugs__ 917270861 Craftsman Lawn tractor

A:

Thank you for choosing Sears parts direct. I will be happy to help with your lawn tractor. Upon researching model number 917270861; the carb has small air ports that can be clogged. The heat may be loosening the gunk and causing the unit to bog down. It may have a worn seal or gasket. The armature magneto works with the spark plug. The plug creates the spark and the magneto sends the power. There may be an issue with the magneto. Test each part for power and check the magneto for power.

Thank you for choosing Sears. We appreciate your business and have a good day.

Q:

engine stops running 917270861 Craftsman Lawn tractor

A:

Thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you’re having with the tractor dying when the brake/clutch pedal is released. I know how frustrating that is.

Your Tractor uses an Operator Presence (seat) switch that will cause engine to stall if blades are engaged or the brake is released without anyone on the seat. If ample amount of weight is not kept on the seat during operation or the operator is leaning forward the tractor will stall because the Operator Presence (seat) switch senses that the operator is not completely on the seat.

To check Operator Presence (seat) switch:

Lift seat.

Locate wires that connect to Operator Presence (seat) switch under the seat.

Disconnect and clean any debris in the switch connector. Use an ohmmeter to check the switch. When the switch is not pushed, the reading should be 0 ohms (closed). When pushed it should read OL (open load).

Make sure the connector is fully seated on the seat switch. The connector is a special connector that will short the two wires if it is not fully seated. If there is an issue with the connector, or the switch itself is defective, it will cause these types of issues.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

How do I purge the transmission on my tractor?

A:

Move the machine to a level surface where you have some room. Pull the bypass rod out where you can roll it freely. Start the tractor. With the machine in bypass, move the shift lever to the full forward position, count to 4 (four) the move lever to the full reverse position and count to 4 (four). Do that about 8-10 times. Then push the bypass rod into the drive position and do the same thing. Even if it starts moving, still do it about 8-10 times. It could take more than 8-10 times, but normally that will suffice.
