I am sorry to hear of the issue you’re having with the tractor starting. I know how frustrating that is.

The solenoid has two large cables mounted to it, one from the battery and one going directly to the starter motor. When you turn the key to the Start position, a trigger voltage is sent down to the solenoid and the solenoid should connect those two large cables to send battery voltage directly to the starter motor.

There are a couple things to test for. The first you already noted, the contacts in the solenoid are large and you can normally hear them make the connection with a click when you turn the key to the Start position. The second test is to see if the solenoid is connecting the two large cables. You can do that by removing the cables and checking for continuity across them with an Ohm Meter or Test Light when you turn the key to the Start position. The last test is to confirm the trigger voltage is reaching the solenoid when you turn the key. There should be one or two smaller wires going to the solenoid as well as the two large cables. One of those wires should have approximately 12 volts on it when the key is turned to the Start position (if you have two wires, the other one will be a ground wire only).

In this case, you are hearing a click which likely indicates the solenoid is getting trigger voltage and is trying to connect the cables so the solenoid itself is likely okay. You can do a quick confirmation if you take a screwdriver with a plastic handle and touch the metal blade across the two mount bolts for the two large cables. Be sure to protect yourself and hold the handle of the screwdriver only since there should be battery voltage present that could spark or quickly create heat.

When you manually connect, or jump these two cable points the starter should begin to spin. If the key is off the tractor will not start but the starter will still spin (since you are manually powering the starter motor).

I am guessing that in your case the tractor will not try to start, since it sounds like you can turn the key and the solenoid engages but nothing else happens. If that is the case there are a couple of things that might commonly be happening. You might have a bad battery or starter cable (one of the two large ones connected to the solenoid) or something may be preventing the starter from turning regardless of input. A quick way to check both is simply to test for power where the one large cable connects directly to the starter. If you have 12 volts or more there when you turn the key to Start then everything is working up to that point and the starter has an issue.

It could be a failed starter motor, but often it is something simple like a jammed gear where the starter engages the flywheel to turn the engine over. In that case you can try manually turning the engine to free the jammed gear. Moving the engine output pulley, or even the screen at the blower housing, back-and-forth will often do that.

If you had low, or no, voltage at the starter when you tested and the solenoid tests okay, then one of the two large cables to the solenoid has failed inside or is not making a clean contact at a mount point.
Or, sometimes, a battery can still show good voltage but will short when a load is applied. You could check that quickly by jumping the battery.

I am sorry to hear of the starting issue you're having with the tractor. I know how frustrating that is.

First, make sure the engagement lever is down or the PTO button is pushed in and the brake pedal is fully depressed or the tractor will not attempt to turn over. If you have already done this, I recommend checking the fuse. The fuse is located behind the dash. If the fuse is good, you have a wiring or switch problem. The easiest way to pin point the problem is with a volt meter. If you do not have a meter, you can purchase one relatively cheap. There is a wiring diagram for the tractor on page 31 of the owner's manual. 

Turn the meter to check dc volts, and then hold the black lead to the black negative battery terminal for all of the voltage checks. Place the red lead on the positive terminal of the battery. The reading should be 12 volts. If you have a 12 volt reading, move the red lead to the B terminal of the ignition switch or the red wire. Your reading should be 12 volts. If you have 12 volts, have someone sit on the tractor and hold the brake pedal while turning the key for the rest of the checks. While they have the key turned to the start position, move the red lead to the white wire (terminal S on the ignition switch) on the clutch/brake safety switch. The reading should always be 12 volts. Then move to the attachment PTO safety switch. If you lose the 12 volts, the problem is between the last check you had the voltage and where you lost the voltage. If you have 12 volts all the way to the white wire on the solenoid, the solenoid or the starter is defective.

To determine starter or solenoid, short the two large posts on the solenoid together with a screwdriver. There should be a spark it is normal. Once shorted the starter should run. If the key is turned to Start, the tractor should fire up.

This very likely could be a defective battery, fuse, a shorted safety switch, or a wire that’s shorting or grounding out.

I am sorry to hear of the starting issue you’re having with the tractor. I know how frustrating that is to have happen.

There are three basics the engine needs: Ignition, Compression, and Fuel.

First, go back to the spark plug. Remove the leads, or wires, that connect from the engine to the plug. Remove the plug and put them back in the leads. Now position the leads so the metal end of the plug is against the engine or another clean unpainted metal ground point. Keep your hands away from the plugs so you do not get shocked, and turn the key to the start position. Look for sparks at the ends of the Spark Plug. Look carefully as they might be hard to see in sunlight or other bright lights. If there is spark there then you have ignition, the first of the three basics. If not, you likely have an electrical problem that needs to be traced.

The engine should have been spinning over faster once the plug was removed and you should hear air rushing out of the spark plug holes in puffs. You could even try putting a thumb or finger over each plughole to see if the pressure pushes your finger off when turning over, just be careful not to touch the grounded plugs so you do not get shocked. If that all happens then you have the second ingredient, compression. If not then you may need a valve adjustment or may have a broken component inside the engine.

That leaves fuel. Check the tips of the plug you just removed, if fuel is reaching the engine there should be some residue there and they should look somewhat wet. If you used your finger to check compression then you may even see some residue on your finger. If there is fuel here, your problem may be old fuel or a timing issue. Try putting a small amount of good fuel into the throat of the carburetor and turn the key to start. If your problem is fuel related only, the engine should now try to start, or even run, until the fuel you put in is gone. That would indicate the fuel supply is being stopped in the fuel tank, fuel line, fuel filter, fuel pump, or carburetor. Some carburetors have a solenoid to stop the fuel supply when the key is off and a malfunction there could also be the problem.
