Q:

hydrostatic transmission oil 917.258912 Craftsman Tractor

A:

Thank you for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

I have attached the entire page from the service manual for this transmission. You will notice in the document that they mention synthetic Mobil 1 oil directly, this is extremely important.

It is calling for 45 ounces of 15w50 synthetic Mobil 1 oil.

If you have any further questions or inquiries, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

Thank you for your help. Is there a manual or test procedures for the unit? Where can we obtain the service manual?

Thanks for the response and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

There is a service manual available for the hydro gear transaxles that is available for purchase. The cost is very reasonable for this type of manual too. For convenience, I have included a blue link below that you may click on to be directed to the PartsDirect page to view and purchase it if needed.

Service Manual for Hydro Gear Transaxle

Let me know if you have any further questions and hope you have a great weekend.

With the transmission in neutral and pressure release in, why won't the tractor move if I try to move it?

Thanks for the recent response, I have a few suggestions you can try, hopefully these will help with the issue:

1. Follow the bypass lever to the lever on the transmission and make sure it moves when you move the bypass lever. Sometimes the valve inside the transaxle will get rust on it. Spray the area on the transaxle where the bypass lever attaches to the transaxle. Use a good rust buster and spray it liberally. Pull the bypass lever out and release it, let the spring snap it closed as fast as it will. Do this 10-12 times and see if it makes a difference.

2. You can also try to purge the transmission of any air trapped inside, especially if you just serviced it.

I have attached a visual of the purge process for the tractor you can refer to.

Let me know how these checks go and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. I see that James R has given you some link to previous answered questions that did not solve the problem I have provided you with the trouble shooting information. Please follow the flow chart to aid in the diagnostics of the tractor. If the hi key was gone or sheared the brakes would not hold the tractor because the key aligns the brake disc. To double check, the key put the tractor in transport and push it back and forth. Then set the parking brake and try the same thing. If the key is ok you will not be able to push the tractor.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for your question. I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. I have provided you with the trouble shooting information. If the tractor is stuck in transport mode, I recommend checking the bypass valve. I have seen the plunger in the valve rust and stick in. If this has happened on yours, I recommend soaking the plunger with penetrating oil and work it back and forth. If you cannot get it to pop out use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the plunger out. If the key was gone or sheared the brakes would not hold the tractor because the key aligns the brake disc. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Q:

Hi! I have a model 917.258912 GT and a 917.252461 Tiller attachment. 1) Are these compatible? 2) If so, how the dickens do I attach it. Love this

Fall is the time to turn the soil and get it ready to sleep through the winter. While you wait for the expert to get those step by step instructions, you can check out the schematics if you like. They give an exploded view of the tiller and tractor. This may help you be ready for the expert answer. I attached the links below. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your question.

The tiller is not compatible with your tractor. The tiller is for an older tractor and uses the tractor engine to run it. I would say the tiller is a late 70s to early 80s model, if not older. The tiller that fits your tractor has its own engine and fits all tractors with a tow bar. Please click on this link to view this tiller .

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.
