I know how important it is to have a good working tractor in your home so that you can keep your grass maintained. While you are waiting for an expert answer, I did manage to find a link that will provide you with some good information about what may be causing your problem. Hope this helps!

A:

This is very likely related to the seat safety switch. Raise the seat on your tractor and locate the switch and then unplug it. Make sure the terminals are clean and corrosion free and then plug the switch back in. Push the plug hard against the switch and then immediately try to drive the tractor. If it works like normal then use a zip tie to secure the switch to the plug. If the problem persists then the switch may have failed or something else may be going on.

Let me know what you find out.

Wade_B You were right on. The switch pins had corrosion on them and when I disconnected ,cleaned and rehooked it up to the switch it worked fine. Thanks.

Q:

I'm working on a 917.258911 mower and need the transaxle oil type and volume.

Something that would have this information is your owners manual. If you do not have yours a handy thing about the Manage My Life website is you can go onto the top of the Manage My Life website and click on the tab button then insert your model number into the search box. I have attached a link below which includes your owners manual. I hope the link that I have provided you is useful. http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals/10622/CRAFTSMAN-Lawn-Tractor-L0909447?brand_name_search=917.258911+

It's not in the owners manual, and sears service says it doesn't have access to this information. It is sold as a sealed unit only to be completely replaced.

I have attached the entire page from the service manual for this transmission.

You will notice in the document that they mention Mobil 1 oil directly, this is extremely important. I know that lots of people have lots of differing opinions on brands of oil, I do as well. For this application, every single unit I have seen that did not have the Mobil brand oil in it has failed.

If you have any further questions please let me know.
