Thank you for your question on the tractor stalling when you engage the clutch.

I think you are right in that you are having a problem with the operator presence switch (seat switch).

I would suggest that you remove the connection to the switch and clean any corrosion on the contacts and try putting on and off a couple of times to scrub the contacts so they will make better connection. If that does not help then I would suggest replacing it.

Because this tractor has few years on it you may want to just replace the switch.

Seat Switch for lawn tractor model 917.256570 .

Please let me know if that solved the problem.

Q:

My Craftsman riding mower would not restart. It cranks, gets fuel, but no spark.

A:

The things that can cause the engine to not have fire are: safety switch on clutch/brake rod, safety switch on deck engagement lever, seat switch, seat switch connector, shorted wire in wire harness, or a bad ignition module.

To determine if the problem is in the ignition module or the safety switches. Disconnect the kill wire from the ignition module. If the engine still has no spark, the ignition module is bad. If there is spark with the kill wire disconnected, check the safety switches.
