Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com and being a valued member. It is unfortunate to hear that you are having issues with your lawn tractor and I do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. I'm looking at your model number 917256531 and I recommend checking the engine for spark first. To check for spark remove the spark plug. Then connect the spark plug to the spark plug wire. Now you will need to hold the base of the spark plug to a clean metal surface with insulated pliers. Once you have the spark plug in position have a helper turn the engine over. You should see a blue spark from the spark plug. If you do not have spark, remove the kill wire from the module. Then check for spark again. If there is no spark, the module is defective. It can also be an issue with the fuel or the compression. The first thing I would do is remove the fuel filter and pour a few teaspoons for fuel into the throat of the carburetor. Then try to start the engine. If the engine starts and stalls the problem is in the fuel supply or carburetor. Usually the carburetor needs to be cleaned because it has been sitting. Once the carburetor is cleaned, fill the tank with fresh fuel and check the operation. If the engine does not try to start with pouring gas into the carburetor the problem could be with compression. To check the compression you need to remove the spark plug. Then tuck the spark plug wire out of the way. Put your finger over the spark plug hole to seal it. The compression should blow past your finger. If it does not the engine has an internal problem. Here is a link that will help troubleshooting the safety switches and solenoid. Just click the blue link above to be taken to the page. I trust this information will help you.

Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your questions about the transaxles on two different Craftsman tractors. Are you wanting to know if one transaxle can be subsituted for the other? Or are you wanting to know if you can use parts off of one transaxle to repair the other? I will be happy to help you with this. I have included the link for the owner's manuals for both models for you compare the differences.

Owner's Manual for Craftsman Tractor model 917.272059.
Owner's Manual for Craftsman Tractor model 917.256531.

The tractor model number 917.272059 has a 16 HP engine, electric start, with a 6 speed Peerless transaxle model number 206-545C. A parts diagram for the transaxle is on page 48 of the manual. How it attaches under the tractor is on page 36.

The tractor model number 917.256531 has a 15.5 HP engine, with a Hydro Gear Transaxle model number 310-0650. The transaxle parts diagram is on page 48 of the manual. How it attaches under the tractor is on page 36.

There are major differences between the transaxles. The Hydro Gear has a hydro fan on it (Key 94 on page 36). The Peerless has no fan. The transaxle pulley (key 3 on the same page) on the Hydro Gear is much smaller than the one on the Peerless. There are also differences in other parts such as the drive belt, engine pulley, the parking brake rod and the foot pedal shaft, to name a few.

If you are wanting to replace one transaxle with another, it will not work in this case. If you are wanting to interchange parts, use the parts lists to find the part number. If they are the same number, or one number substitutes to the other number, the part is interchangeable. If the part numbers don't match, they are not interchangable.

I hope this answers your questions. If I can be of any further assistance, please respond to this thread. Thank you for choosing Sears. We appreciate your business.

Hi,

Thanks for contacting ManageMyLife. I understand how frustrating it is having trouble with your appliance not working.

There is a welded bracket on the brake/clutch shaft assembly. The spring connects to a hole in this bracket.

With one end connected to the bracket, move the spring toward the front of the tractor as far as it will go. Look for a hole in the frame that has the paint worn from one side. This will be where the other end of the spring connects. The previous spring will have worn the paint from around the hole.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. We are always here to help.

Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.
