Question and Answers

Q:

The steering on my 917.255580 riding lawn mower slips past the gears. 917255580 Craftsman Lawn, tractor

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

I am sorry to hear of the issues you're having with the tractor. I know how frustrating that is.

It's likely that your sector gear steering shaft gear have worn and are slipping on the right turns. You will need to take a look at the gears mating while someone is turning the wheel to make sure they are mating properly. Periodic lubrication is needed to prevent wear on the gears. They may need replacement.

In regards to the belt, make sure the belt keepers are close to the belt. They should be about an 1/8" away from the belt. Check the belt itself for burn marks or excessive play from stretching. It will likely be either a belt issue or a keeper or pulley issue.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

Tractor stopped moving 917255580 Craftsman Lawn, tractor

A:

Hello, glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. We, at Sears, value your service.

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is a problem with the tractor not moving.

Glad to help out.  I’m looking at your Craftsman Tractor model number 917255580.

The first thing to look at is the drive belt.   See if the belt is broke or not turning due to a drive pulley.

There could be a problem with the transmission/transaxle.  Check the shift arm and linkage. If they are ok, a technician will be needed to check the transaxle.

You may need to get a service technician out there to look at it.  If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: www.SearsServiceCrew.com.

and from the deecription it sounds like the choke valve but really hard to point out a part that has fallen out or to the side of the mower.  You may need to have a service technician do the repair. If you have further questions please resubmit your question for further information.
