Q:

how do i put a tie rod on a tractor with model number 917.255451

A:

When making adjustments on an appliance I know how important it is to have detailed information to make the project much easier. While you are waiting for your expert answer, I did manage to find a link in where you can enter your appliance model number and the owners manual will pop up. I hope my link is useful.

The tie rod is the rod that goes between the left and right front wheels. To replace it you need to remove the cotter pin from each end of the tie rod where it goes through the spindle. Then lift the rod out. Set the new rod in place, put the washers on the end (if it has them) then put the cotter pins back through the hole and bend the ends so they do not come out.

If you are replacing the drag link, the rod that goes from the spindle to the steering gear, it's a little more difficult. You will need to use a 1/2inch wrench and a 9/16 wrench to remove the bolts from the ends of the drag link. Getting to the end that's connected to the steering gear can be a little bit difficult and you may have to raise the front of the tractor to easily get at it. Remove the nuts from each end and then pull the old drag link out. Position the new drag link and tighten down the nuts on each end and that's it.
