Question and Answers

Q:

why wont my mower deck raise and lower

A:

Tractor problems can seem challenging. While you wait for the expert to answer, I attached the owner's manual in case you did not have it to consult. It may help. I found one previous answer to a similar question, that you can read if you like as well. If you do decide on having an experienced technician diagnose and repair , an option is to visit Sears Home Services and use the scheduler.

On the left hand side of the tractor where the end of the electric lift motor shaft mounts to the lifting mechanism, check to make sure the pin hasn’t moved over. I’ve run across a few of these where the pin that holds it to the left mechanism will move over and lay up against the frame. That will not allow the motor to drop the deck down.

It is also possible that something is wrong with the lift motor itself. The power wires to the motor should have a fuse. If that fuse is blown the motor cannot run. If the power wires that go to the motor have come unplugged or are loose in the connector the outcome would be the same.

If I can manage to locate some actual photos of this set up, I will post them here as well.

Also, if you can provide me with the serial number from your tractor that would be a big help. There were some problems early on with some of the lifts that were put on, I want to make sure yours doesn't fall into that group.

First thing to do is take the tension off the belts so you can move the blade independent of one another. then line up the left to center blade and then the center to right blade. Make sure that the blade tips are even with each other (can be about 1/4 inch difference). If they do not, check for bent blades. If blades are not bent then the mandrel is bent/damaged or the deck is bent. If the blades all line up as they should, check to make sure the front tires have same amount of air. and that the back tires have the same amount of air. If that looks good, then place a level on the mower deck across the front (or back) where it's flat. Adjust the side hangers (under the foot rests) to get the deck leveled out.

Q:

I need a coupler that goes between the hydo pump and transaxle I don't see on here 917254740 Craftsman 18 hp tractor

A:

The owner's manual has clear parts drawings of the transaxle and pump. I recommend that you view the parts on page 43 and 44 of the manual to see if you can find the coupler that you need. If you cannot find the coupler, I recommend that you call the manufacturer (Agri-Fab) at 1-800-448-9282. Agri-Fab should be able to provide you with a part number for the coupler.

If you look on the front of the engine, kind of the right side, you should notice a place where the kill wire connects to a little terminal. Unplug the little kill wire that goes up under the engine shroud and then check for spark. If you have spark then it's most likely going to the relay in the electrical system causing the problem. It is part number 109748X. If you do not have spark with the kill wire unplugged then the coil has failed and you'll need to remove the engine shroud and check the kill wire from where you unplugged it up to the coil and make sure it's not grounding. If the wire there is good then the coil has indeed failed and will need to be replaced. If you find that to be the case, use the engine model number to order the replacement coil.
