Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when needing your riding mower to run smooth.

I am sorry though in that I am not sure which gears you are talking about.   May I ask are they the gears in the transmission?  Is your transmission slipping?

If you have further questions please let me know.
Thanks for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

Thank you for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com. I am sorry to hear of the issue you are experiencing with the transaxle, I know how frustrating it is to not have any of the gears engage. I also apologize that this question went unanswered for as long as it did, we appreciate you using SearsPartsDirect.com and are here to help in any way we can.

Presuming that you haven't recently taken off the rear wheels and had the square key slip, and also presuming you've checked the drive belt is completely secured, we can focus on the transmission.

Your transmission could be in need of a transmission fluid service. To check the level, measure from the edge of the fill hole (top center of trans) to the fluid and it should be between 1.25 to 1.5 inches. The transmission will use a 20w50 motor oil.

If the fluid level checks out, you will more than likely have to remove the transaxle from the tractor, open it up, and thoroughly check the internal gears and components to make sure everything is in tact. If by chance there is a gear in need of replacement, I would recommend to replace as many if not all the gears you can. I do see that due to the age of this model, some gears have since been discontinued, however, it would make economical sense to replace as many as you can if it needs to be opened considering the time/investment of labor it would take.

For your convenience, I have included a blue link below that you may click on to be directed to the PartsDirect page where you can view the schematic and parts still available for the unit. Hopefully this will help.
