Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
In order to find engine parts, you have to use your engine model number versus tractor model number in Sears Parts.

Thank you for your question.

The mower has a differential not a solid axle. When lifted off the ground and one wheel turned the other will turn the other direction. This is normal with a differential set up. Now when the mower is put into gear the transaxle will drive the wheel with the least resistance. If the key is missing, the axle is not locked with the wheel so it has less resistance and will turn that side. If you remove the axle caps and have someone, start the mower and put it in gear you will see the axle turn. If this is what is going on, install a new key and this should take care of the problem. I have added an image of how the key is installed.

You might be able to find the old key in the area where you removed the wheels. Often the key will come off with the wheel then drop out when the tire is changed.

I hope this is helpful please let me know if you need further assistance.

A:

Thank you James and Mark. I got a new piece of 3/16" x 2" square keystock from our maintenance guy at work. I installed the new key in the axle/wheel slot where the old one was missing and we are mowing!

Q:

Will the 38" in. mower deck from model 917254611 fit or can it be adapted to fit mower model 917270430?

A:

The mower can be adapted to work. The lift arms will have to be swapped when the deck is. There might be some other things that will have to be moved. You will find them as you connect the deck to the tractor.
