A:

I did some research on the model number 917.248940 though it comes up as a grass catcher. Your expert will help answer your question. It may take two business days for your expert to reply. I do hope that everything works out on the tractor.

Thank you for your question.  I am sorry you are having a problem with the tractor. I will be happy to assist you. I posted an image below that shows how to check the oil level in the transaxle. Just click on the image to enlarge it. Before checking the oil level, I recommend hooking your foot under the brake and pulling back. If the tractor operates better with your foot pulling back, on it I recommend checking for binding in the idler system and make sure the return spring is connected. If it does not make a difference, I recommend checking the oil level in the transaxle.  I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.  Thank you for using Manage my life.    Mark T.

Hello Lawrence,

I would like to answer your question. Due to legal reasons, I cannot tell you how to modify your craftsman part. I will say that there may be information on the internet concerning the adaptation that you would like to perform. Most of the bagger designs are very similar, with different discharge tubes being the main difference. Sears Parts Direct is a link to the correct bagger for your tractor. The chute is listed and may work as two separate pieces. I hope that this helps.

Jerry C., really DON'T want to modify the bagger chute, (unless I have to), What I need is a part # for the lower section of the chute, (that attaches to the mower deck). The problem seems that there are baggers for the 38" deck (# 917-248900 & # 917-249980), the 48" deck (# 917-249160), and a 54" deck (# 917-248940)..... There IS a bagger for a 42" deck, (# 24919), however that is for a 'zero-turn' model. I think that IF I can find the lower chute, I will be able to modify the upper chute sections together to make them work......(can anybody say 'DUCT TAPE') !!!!! Parts Direct is helpful, but I need somebody that has 'garfed' their knuckles a few times to understand what I need. I have worked as a small engine mechanic for over 35 years, when in Montana I was the Sears Service mechanic for 8 years. Things have sure changed since then........

Hello Lawrence,

I'm sorry that we are having a miscommunication. I posted a link for you that takes you directly to the parts page where the lower section of the chute is shown, item #18. This is for a 42 inch deck. I believe that this is the part that you are inquiring about.

Please let me know if there is anything further that I may assist you with. Jerry C

JERRY C......it was not a miscommunication, on your part, but a misunderstanding on my part.... When I saw the 'highlighted' 'Parts Direct' I thought it was to their "home page", and not to the EXACT PART THAT I NEEDED!!!!!!!! WOW, I am impressed!!! The research that I did skipped over that 42" deck, I now have the manual downloaded and will be ordering the parts later today. THANK YOU!!!!!!
