Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The top shouldn't need to come off in order to replace one of the surface element receptacles. The receptacle will be fastened to the top with a single screw. Remove the screw and cut the wires off at the old receptacle; trim 1/4 inch of the wire insulation off the end of the cut wires. Connect the new wires of the new receptacle with ceramic wire nuts to the old wires and re-install the new receptacle. DO NOT use plastic wire nuts to reconnect the wires, they will melt. Use Ceramic wire nuts.

I added an image below with the procedure for removing the top if you have to. I would definitely try to avoid removing the top if at all possible. I hope this is helpful.
