The noise that you hear could be the metal expanding and contracting in the range based on your description. You can try replacing that bottom bake element since the feet are damaged. The replacement element will have new feet. This may fix your problem. The part number for that element is WB44K5012. You can order it from the Sears PartsDirect website. It costs about $42. Here is a direct link for that part: Bake Element . Be sure that you unplug the range to completely disconnect electrical power before accessing and replacing that element.

I recommend that you replace that element before you attempt to run the self clean cycle. It is probably not shorting out to the metal in the cabinet since you did not indicate that your house circuit breakers or fuses for the range were tripped or blown. If you replace that element and still have problems, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

If you want to have a service technician examine the range and repair this problem, you can schedule one through this link: Sears Home Services .
