Question and Answers

I have a lady kenmore range, mod. no 9117390990 The igniter for burners does not turn off but keeps snapping.

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The spark ignition for the surface burners are controlled by 4 switches. The switches are clipped in a stationary position on top of each of the 4 burner valves. All 4 switches are connected in a parallel series circuit. If any one of the 4 switches sitting over the top of each of the burner stems has rotated on the burner valve instead of sitting stationary, all 4 electrodes will spark. Each one of the spark switches must sit stationary on top of the gas valves. If water was spilled and the water happened to run into any one of the 4 spark switches, the water will short the contacts in the spark switches and will also cause all 4 electrodes to spark. Once the water dries, it would likely stop sparking.

In order to access the spark switches, the manifold cover/control panel covering the burner valves will have to be taken off. The glass top will likely have to be removed in order to access the screws along the top of the manifold cover. There will be some screws along the bottom of the manifold cover to remove also. I was not able to locate any instructions on how to remove the top but a can tell you that all the screws around each burner/burner bowl will have to be removed. There is likely some screws along the bottom front edge of the top to remove as well. The burners bowls and all the screws on the bunrer bowls must be removed before attempting to raise the top.
You may want to consider calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your range. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before servicing.
