I am sorry that you are having some difficulties with your repairs. I did some research and I was able to find a link that will guide you in removing the top of the range. I hope this helps with your research while you wait for your expert response.

I tried removing the two screws in the front, raising the back to clear the hinges, and it still will not slide forward more than an inch. The doc you uploaded talks about a glass top. This is a 1981 kenmore model and does not have a glass top. Is the same technique used on this model and if so, what would be causing my issue with the top not wanting to move forward after the hing clips are free?

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

I was not able to locate any step by step instructions on removing the cooktop for the older model range. By looking at the parts image I added below, it appears you will need to pull the range out and remove the screws along the back of the cooktop (key #'s 8 &14). Then it looks like you will need to slide the top forwards to dis-engage the front from the two clips (key#18) and lift the front of the top up and prop it up. You may need to remove each of the screws securing the surface element receptacles to the top if there is not enough slack in the wires to prop the top up. NOTE: Disconnect the range from the power source before servicing.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.
