The F-4 error code indicates that the control board detects a problem with the oven temperature sensor circuit. You can shut off the circuit breakers or remove the house fuses for the range and check the wiring between the control board and that sensor. You can access the temperature sensor in the oven as shown in the image below. If you have a volt/ohm meter, you can check the resistance through that component. It should measure around 1100 ohms at room temperature. If the sensor is bad, then the range will need to be replaced. The replacement part for that oven temperature sensor (part 334300) is no longer available.

If the sensor is good, then you can plug that component back in and check the resistance through the connection at the control board. The second image provides some information on that test. That image is from a micro-fiche card (you were correct when you indicated the range is old). If the resistance through the circuit that plugs into the board is okay, then your control board will need to be pulled out and sent to Core Centric Solutions for repair. Here is a link for that company in case you need it: Core Centric Solutions.com . The control board is no longer available as a new part but it can be sent to that company for repair (cost is around $150 for repair). You could then re-install the repaired control board in your range. Be sure that you shut off the house circuit breakers or remove the house fuses for the range before accessing internal components.

These tips may help for fix this problem on your own. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details and we will try to help you further.

Sorry to hear about the ruined St. Patrick's Day meal. I can imagine how bad that would be.

NOTE: If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services . Keep in mind that the technician may not be able to repair the range if it needs that temperature sensor.
