Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The failure could be the solid disc surface element, the burner control switch or the thermal safety switch. The burner control switch is more likely to fail than the solid disc element or the thermal safety switch.

The burner control switch is $185.53. The solid disc element is $122.99 and thermal switch no longer available. The service fee will be approximately $110.00 to diagnose the failure.

In order to diagnose which one is faulty will require testing the thermal switch for continuity, burner control voltage and continuity of the solid disc. In order to access and test the components will require removing the cook top, and glass. I strongly suggest calling a service technician to properly diagnose the failure. It would likely be best to replace the cook top rather that to attempt to have the cook top repaired.

If you decide to have the cook top diagnosed, you can have it diagnosed and possibly repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I added an image below to reference. In order to access and replace one of the solid disc burners you will need to disconnect the power supply and remove the cook top from its installation. Once the cook top has been removed from the counter top you will need to remove the screws (key#15) around the perimeter of the burner box (key#14) and then you should be able to lift the glass top off. Once the top has been removed you should be able to access and remove the burner after removing the element clamp (key#9).

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Q:

How do I replace the elements on my Kenmore cook top?

A:

First you will need to disconnect the power & remove the cook top from its installed location. Next you want to separate the burner box #14 from the burner top #21 by removing all of the perimeter screws # 15. You may need a razor knife to break the seal. Once you get the top & bottom separated you will see how the elements are mounted.
