Sam & Sandy, There isn't any adjustment to the chains on this model. It's not the greatest design and what you are describing is typical for all of us trying to do repairs on this clunker. The sprocket for both sides slides onto the drive shaft on splines and is held in place by snap rings. What you probably need is a new DIFFERENTIAL shaft/planetary gear part# 532 42 88-76. Working on the transmission for this machine is not for the inexperienced mechanic. I've replaced the rubber driver wheel/clutch, the part I mentioned above and will probably put a new friction wheel on the machine before I get it to run. Sears has most of the parts but at this point, if you haven't started the repairs yet and someone would be willing to take the thing off your hands for a couple hundred... take it an run to the Snapper dealer. Experienced and still learning.R
