Question and Answers

Q:

what fluid goes into the auger gearbox? 247883700 Craftsman Snow thrower

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

Originally, I think the gearbox had 80W90 gear oil. If the seals in the gearbox are in good shape, you can continue to use the gear oil. If the seals seem worn and you think it will leak, you can use quality grease instead of the oil. Lubriplate would work just fine. If you have a hard time finding lubriplate, you can use good quality white lithium grease as well.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

Thank you for your question. I am sorry you are having a problem with the snow blower. If the ground drive is not working, as it should, I recommend checking the cable adjustment first. If the cable is not adjusted correctly, the unit will stop under a load. The image below shows how to adjust the drive cable. Just click on the image to enlarge it. After you make the adjustment check the operation. If the unit still stops under a load, I recommend checking the drive belt. If it is worn, it should be replaced. If the belt is ok, tip the unit onto its nose and remove the bottom access panel. Once it is removed, you will see the rubber friction disc. If the disc is dried and cracked, it should be replaced.  The parts can be ordered from the following link. Hello Bob,

I'm sorry to hear that your snow blower is malfunctioning and I would like to assist you.  The likely cause of this problem is a stripped pinion gear in the gearbox that drives the augers.  I have attached an image with the part highlighted, as an attachment at the end of this reply.  You have the option of disassembling the gearbox and replacing the gear itself, or replacing the gearbox as an assembly.  Sears Parts Direct is a direct link to the parts in this section of your snow blower.

Please let me know how you would like to proceed and if you would like any further assistance.
